15 - Filipino Athletes

Yes! Without any doubt, I say that we Filipinos are not born superstars in the field of sports. Filipinos don’t have the right physique, the height, agility and other factors that is used mainly in sports, but the thing I believe and I am sure about is that we can be superstars.

Justin V. Besmano is my name. I list five reasons on why the Philippine Government should support our very own athletes. This reasons are not just things concerning the athletes, but also traits that athletes possess that they should consider.

“Hard work”. Pertains to the characteristics of Filipinos. We all know that if we Filipinos want to succeed, we to put more time in training. We put our life to training to be able to reach our goal and become the best.

That is right! No one can ever question the hardworking attitude that athletes put in training, but the big question is that: Do we have correct places and correct equipment to make their training successful? For me, there is none.

We don’t have gyms, facilities and other equipment for our athletes to practice on. Athletes will ever improve if they don’t have these so the Government should stress a point to that. It is one factor to consider why they should support Filipino athletes.

Second on my list is the term “Potential. In terms of sports, Filipinos have a lot of potential. I can see that we are born sports minded meaning we are naturally addicted to sports from the moment we were born. And I think that potential will start there.

Passion is for me the reason why there is potential. If we are passionate about something we put too much attention to that, and after skills are starting to grow and the true potential in every athlete will sooner arise.

Although athletes are passionate and contains lot of potential, there are some person where their talents are not maximized properly. There are athletes who is better than the current players who are playing but the never got the attention because of lack of support. They should find a way to solve that.

Third, we are competitors. We love the fact that we are representing someone against other teams. And it is an honor to represent our country. An unbelievable feeling. With that I can say that even though you are not an athlete we are “Competitors”

To further explain, let me give you one example. In school, we love competing with our friends in terms of academics, we want to win over our classmates. That thing is just the same as competing with foreigners. Filipino athletes want to show the world the strength of Filipinos in terms of sport. Although sometimes we are not winning at least we show to the world what Athletes in the Philippines can do.

Showing the talents of Filipinos is something that we should be proud of. A precious thing that government should not put into waste. They may give extra reward just to show appreciation for what they have done and also to motivate athlete to do better next time.

Fourth is “Big Heart”. This two words refer to the ability of Filipino to engage in different kinds of problems that usually we are underdog. A term that also refers to the strongest armor that the athletes here in the Philippines have.

Filipino athletes shows the heart of a true Filipino. They fight for their country as they are fighting for their lives. Athletes fight even though they know that there is a big gap between them and other foreign athletes in terms of their talent.

In return, just to be fair, Government should also have this big heart in supporting the athletes. It should be fair, Give and take. They should implement law that concerns about providing funds to buy equipment and facilities to provide good and quality training for our very own athletes.

Lastly, I will repeat what I have said earlier, we are not born superstars but we are born to be superstars. And also, as everybody knows, we are born happy, crazy and I may say as for the last reason is we have “Thick face”. It brought impact about being an athlete and as a person as well.

Having thick face for me is not bad, it is just something related to being proud of who you are. This thing is consider as one of the weapon that we Filipinos always bring. With the help of this trait we were able to stand proudly against all adversities.

But contrast, Government should not be that. They should not be a kind of person who is so much thick. They should be kind in giving help. They should be supportive for their own countrymen because those athlete will make our country shine someday.

Well for me, those things are to consider why the government should put more funds. I focus more on the trait because Government cannot see the true trait that athletes have. They know that we lack things but they never knew what are trait inside the heart of a true Filipino. So maybe I hope that they may see this with their naked eye.

Before I end I just want to share one fact that our country won 131 medals in the recently South East Asian games competition. We already won 131, just imagine if the government added more support for the athletes. We would have play better and maybe placed first in the said competition.

So please if one of you become a Government official, Senator or even a President. I am begging, please be awake about the mistake of our government and please help our athletes. Maybe if you were able to add more support we could have more chances of winning in different competition worldwide.

14 - A dream

“To the players, coaches, media witnessing this moment, one of the most special day in my life. Good afternoon.
Wow! I am usually a naughty, noisy, talkative person, but now I am speechless. I don’t know I am going to say. I am nervous but I am happy that I won the most prestige award.
First of all, I want to thank God for giving me this talent in playing basketball.  Thank you Lord for introducing me to basketball. It's been an honor and a privilege to accept the most valuable player award. It’s the dream of every player to have that.   I am lucky that I was the chosen one.
I remember during the start of my career I doubted myself. I always asked myself if I can compete with best players around the world. I don’t know if I have the capability to compete with them.  I put my heart everyday in training, and of course, in the actual game just to show them I got. And I think the question running to my mind at the start has been answered today. My hard work paid off.
I would also like to thank to my teammates, Yao Ming for competing with me.  And I think those times we were competing gave me experience and motivates me to do my best with all that I can.  I would like to thank also Kobe Bryant, for trusting me to play with you. It gave me confidence and boosts my moral. And also, I would like to thank, our coach, coach Chot for believing that I can execute all the plans we had. You pushed me to my limits. And also to all teammates, family and friends that inspired me every single day to play. Thank you.
Thank you God again. Again, Thank you to that staff that chose me to be the MVP. Thank you listening. May God bless us all. Thank you.”

I made this speech as I one of my requirements for our public speaking 2 class. After that, I decided to post this to my blog because it is my dream to make a speech about winning an award. I hope that this dream would come true.

13 - Basketball is more than a Sport

Basketball is not an activity to fill in our time. We don’t play basketball because it is our hobby; basketball is more than our hobby. It is something we live about because it improves our overall health, it promotes sportsmanship and teamwork and it can be a source of financial assistance. Basketball is more than just a sport.

It improves our overall health.  There is a fact that tells that if you play basketball for an hour you will burn 630-750 calories and it makes people healthy. Furthermore, it also build endurance. Another is that it improves self-discipline and concentration.

It promotes sportsmanship and teamwork. Basketball helps to improve camaraderie on and off the court. Basketball is a team sport it teaches the players to go along with their own players to help each other win the ball game. It also tells that they should have trust their teammates to play better basketball. If one team has teamwork and good sportsmanship they will be a contender.

It can be a source of financial assistance. Basketball players who have their good talents may enter the professional league and it can be the source of their income. It can help their friends, society and of course, their families. Basketball can be one of the reasons why you can earn a lot of money. Professional league has also their sponsor for their players, this can make you get more money and become rich.

Basketball is more a sport because it improves one’s health, promotes teamwork and sportsmanship and of course it can be source of financial assistance. Basketball is more than just a sport we just have to look beyond the meaning of it.

12 - Rain

Nowadays, our world is so much hot. People kind very irritated because of this phenomena. Throughout the year every Filipino is having a problem with heat. The farmers are one of the many persons living here that so much affected by this. With this, children and adults is waiting when the rainy season will start.

People with so much affected by heat find many ways just to overcome it. They eat desserts, drink cold drinks and take a bath. But there is one natural way to solve this problem. By just waiting for the rainy season, with patience heat will be disappear. Rain is the answer to all problems. Rain can give us peace, joy and comfort.

Rain makes a lot of people happy. It gives us cold after suffering from a long heat. It gives water to every plants. It also helps the farmers for their crops. Rain has many uses in our daily lives. However it may cause disaster and other problems. But we should not be pessimistic about that, we just have to look more beyond the good side that rain gives us.

11 - Laughter is the best medicine:

Hello to everyone who will have a moment to read my blog. I am currently experiencing cough and headache and that’s the reason why I wrote this blog.

First is that we all know that Filipinos are born happy. Even to the saddest part of our loves, we don’t forget to smile. It seems that smiling is part of every Filipino’s life. And I think possessing that characteristic of always smiling: “Laughter is the Best Medicine” is appropriate to us.

Just like what I have said, I am currently experiencing headache and cough, but I think laughter helps me to overcome this problem. At the start of the day, I kind of feel weak and stressed. I don’t know what to do. I take a lot of medications. I take vitamins and I drink juices just to give my body a support to fight against this illness.

But when the moment I stepped on our room in class and start talking with my friends. I felt different. I laugh with my friends and my body now is working differently. I am a little bit gaining back my power. And it proves that those five words for me is true.

10 - Do I have what it takes to be a Filipino

A simple question but hard for us to answer. After your long existences here in this world have you ever asked yourself if you have the qualities and the capabilities to be a Filipino. It is just easy to answer yes, but the hard thing is to explain what you have done for your own nation. For me I must say yes because of the following reasons:

“In my blood runs the immortal seed of heroes”

A line in the work of Carlos P. Romulo “I am a Filipino” that proves that I am a Filipino. The line tells how fortunate I am to be a Filipino. It only shows that there is a nationalistic gene that runs to our blood. A characteristic that is essential to have. It been so long when our heroes fought for our own justice and freedom, but I think at this point of time the flame in their heart that causes them to fight even though they knew that winning is not on their side is passed in this generation and I think I contain that trait.

I can say that I contain that trait or should I say we contain that trait. We have the capability in ourselves to face problems even though we think that there is only a little percentage for us to succeed. In short, we tend to do better if we are under pressure.  That is the flame that is burning until now. We inherit the trait that made our country and every citizen proud of their nation.
